What we mean by

Regenerative Communities

These can be conscious groupings with a particular focus – such as businesses and sports teams – or localities. Either way, some key ideas that would need to be integrated within each citizen is the need for effective elders of the society and proper initiation of the youth.

Diversity

At the core of all of these communities must be an appreciation of diversity. We aren't talking about the kind of 'diversity' expressed by corporate box ticking and group-think ridden collectives.

Instead, we celebrate the understanding that we are every bit as different as we are alike – and encourage you to embrace your uniqueness to the fullest.

Whether a business or a locality, the return on investment for encouraging this kind of diversity in your community is greater engagement, productivity, a massive reduction in wasted time, saving a tonne of resources on redundant roles, more capacity freed up for long-term thinking, leading to more innovation, resilience, adaptability and agility.

It’s all about ensuring the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts, countering the fragmented efforts that plague most communities.

Eldership

Elders are citizens who have gathered sufficient wisdom to guide their younger counterparts – demonstrating how to move forward in a healthy, balanced fashion. These guardians of the past and custodians of the future mediate conflict so that people learn to get along better, and steward resources so that our communities can continue to evolve and grow.

It is the role of elders to ensure the continuity of culture, increase competence in individuals, create harmony between individuals and steward resources for collective advantage.

These elders guide those with less wisdom to discover a unique function they can serve, as they work toward becoming elders themselves.

One key element of this process is effective rites-of-passages, which enables the youth to mature, become self-responsible – regenerative citizens perhaps – and join their communities as contributors, instead of as dependents.

The role of Elders

Culture

Elders ensure the continuity of culture by passing on time-tested wisdom in the form of stories that cultivate an understanding of how the world works and how to live virtuously within it.

Guidance

Elders increase resilience in their community by guiding youngers toward competence as mature citizens who are fully self-responsible, diverse in purpose and providing value to their community.

Community

Elders increase peace and harmony by building and maintaining community – bringing people together, providing platforms for collaboration and mediating conflict.

Resources

Elders steward resources so that they find their way to individuals and organisations that will use them most economically and effectively toward the creation of a more just, peaceful and harmonious society.

Network

Those who come along to Fourthguides events and meetings often find themselves with connections deeper and more fulfilling than any they've previously had. There's something special here.
